Middle Schoolers Claim First, Second Place in Novice Group at Saturnalia Certamen
Calvert teams claimed first and second place in their division of the Saturnalia Certamen earlier this month, showcasing the students' understanding of Latin, mythology, and more.
At the December 7 competition, hosted by the Key School in Annapolis, Calvert's teams competed in the Novice division, where Quinn D. '25 and Alexander B. '25 clinched first place with an outstanding score of 505.
Right behind them were Seventh Graders Maggie G. '26, Arabella W. '26, and Brynn C. '26, who claimed second place and suffered only one loss — to their first-place schoolmates.
The students, accompanied by Latin teacher Mr. Betkowski and Middle School Head Mr. Buck, also encountered familiar faces: alums like Liam D. '23, Johanna P. '23, Vivien W. '23, Caroline M. '23, Landry W. '24, Teddy M. '24, and Jack M. '22. Each of these alumni were highly involved in Certamen during their time at Calvert, and several have gone on to organize events and competitions at their respective high schools.
In addition to fierce competition, the Key School's Saturnalia event also featured festive songs (sung in Latin, of course), a gift exchange, and Roman board games as students celebrated the classical era.
