About Us

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Building a Supportive and Inclusive Community

At Calvert School, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where every individual feels a strong sense of belonging. Through kindness, respect, and meaningful connections, we create a nurturing space where students and families feel valued and supported. Our goal is to cultivate not only academic excellence but also a community rooted in care and mutual understanding.

How We Foster Belonging at Calvert School

We believe that teaching kindness is foundational to building a sense of belonging. By encouraging empathy, cooperation, and respect, we help students form strong bonds with their peers, teachers, and community. These relationships create a supportive atmosphere where students feel confident to express themselves, take risks, and grow into compassionate individuals who contribute positively to the world.

Highlights of Our Community Initiatives

  • Inspiring Speakers: In Spring 2023, Fulbright Scholar Dr. José B. González inspired Tenth and Middle-School students with his story and poetry, showing how personal experiences and creativity can uplift and connect people.
  • Educational Trips: Seventh Graders visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., to deepen their understanding of history and how individuals and communities have contributed to progress.
  • MLK Jr. Day of Service: Each year, hundreds of community members come together for service activities that teach the value of giving back and working together to create positive change.
  • International Week and Multicultural Festival: This vibrant event celebrates the many cultures that make up the Calvert community. Families share traditions and cuisine, while students learn the importance of appreciating different perspectives. Highlights include potluck dinners and interactive demonstrations, such as Chef Bal Arneson's cooking showcase in February 2024.
  • Community Service Drives: Student-led food and supply drives teach the importance of generosity and teamwork while strengthening connections with the broader Baltimore community.
  • Collaboration and Leadership Opportunities: Students play active roles in events like the Greater Baltimore Middle School Diversity Conference and the Middle Grades Partnership. These programs teach teamwork, foster friendships, and develop leadership skills in inclusive settings.

The Role of Kindness in Belonging

At Calvert, kindness is woven into everything we do. Whether through a simple act of helping a friend or working together on a larger initiative, students learn that kindness creates trust, understanding, and meaningful connections. These lessons help students feel valued and teach them to recognize the value in others, building a school culture where everyone feels they belong.

By prioritizing belonging and kindness, Calvert School ensures that students not only excel academically but also grow as thoughtful, caring individuals who contribute to a more connected and compassionate world.
Calvert School is a coed independent lower and middle school.
