Sixth Grade Day of Service
On Friday, May 5, Calvert Sixth Graders participated in their annual day of service. To start off the day, Mr. Vaught shared his past experience working with The Special Olympics and how stepping out of one’s comfort zone can reap great rewards for years to come.
After Mr. Vaught’s presentation, the students were separated into groups and researched the organizations at which they they would be volunteering. Sixth Grader, Robert H. said that learning about the organizations beforehand, “helped us understand about the history and goals of the organization.” Students also put together presentations for their peers that would be shared later in the day.
The students went to two different organizations, Paul’s Place and Baltimore Hunger Project, located nearby. Students at Paul’s Place helped greet people, helped guests shop for clothing, and prepared and served food. At Baltimore Hunger Project, students packed over 500 bags of food for students in need to take home over the weekend.
While half of the students were off-campus, two groups of students stayed at Calvert to create projects for two unique organizations: Marian House and Art with a Heart. Students working with Art with a Heart helped cut glass for mosaics to be placed around Baltimore City and created decorations for recycling bins. The proceeds from the recycling bin decorations will help art programs for at risk youth throughout Baltimore. Students working with Marian House helped fill Mother’s Day baskets purchased by Calvert’s Diversity Club. They baked cookies, painted keepsake boxes, and made keychains. Creating these keepsakes gave Asha W., “more perspective on how important it is to lend a helping hand to those in need.”
Once all the students returned to Calvert, they put together presentations to share with their fellow classmates. This was a great way for others to learn about the organizations as well as help the students reflect on what they had accomplished throughout the day. Thank you, Sixth Graders, for getting involved in the community!
