One hundred and sixty parents, alumni, grandparents, employees, and friends raised over $37,000 last week during Calvert’s spring giving drive, “Here Comes the Sun.” Launched on Thursday, April 21, the annual fundraising initiative spanned 48 hours, during which time the Calvert community exceeded the drive’s 100-donor goal and proved that there are sunnier days ahead!
The “Here Comes the Sun” giving drive encouraged Calvert community members to celebrate the successes of the last year while looking ahead to ensure the School’s bright future.
In addition to providing the necessary resources to respond to COVID-related challenges, unrestricted gifts to the Calvert Fund support the School’s highest priorities, notably:
- Salaries, benefits, and professional development opportunities for teachers and staff,
- Additional scholarships and aid for students facing financial hardship,
- Funding for students to pursue leadership opportunities,
- Programming and training for students, faculty, and staff to ensure the School community is inclusive and equitable,
- Maintaining the School’s beautiful, growing campus, and
- Funding for unforeseen emergencies within our community.
Donors were asked to submit an optional “Why I Give” statement when completing their donations to the drive.
A dedicated parent of alumni shared, “My two sons got an outstanding education there. Calvert has a special place in our hearts.”
When making her donation, Calvert’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Timika Tyson shared, “Calvert School believes in creating a community of caring and belonging for everyone.”
Students exemplified this statement on April 21, when Middle School members of the Allies and Diversity Clubs presented faculty members with the lessons learned from a recent trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – a valuable outing made possible by donor support of Calvert School.
While “Here Comes the Sun” gave donors an opportunity to designate their support to a specific area of impact, an amazing 77 donors made unrestricted gifts, which gives Calvert the ability to remain flexible during challenging times.
Longtime maintenance team member Kevin Lloyd, who has worked at Calvert for over 25 years, generously pledged his support in the form of a matching gift challenge, offering to donate $5 for all young alumni donors up to $100. Thanks in part to Mr. Lloyd’s challenge, alumni represented 25 percent of donors to “Here Comes the Sun.”
Tenth Age teacher Peggy Szczerbicki has been at Calvert for more than 20 years. She gave generously in honor of her students and the School’s administrative team. Mrs. Szczerbicki was one of many Calvert employees to support Here Comes the Sun; a testament to the extraordinary dedication of Calvert’s amazing faculty and staff.
To strengthen donors’ impact, FLIK Independent School Dining generously contributed $10,000 to the Calvert Fund as a special matching gift for meeting - and exceeding - the drive’s 100-donor goal.
Thank you to Ms. Tyson, Mr. Lloyd, Mrs. Szczerbicki, FLIK Independent School Dining, and the many generous supporters who contributed to Calvert’s spring giving drive. To support Calvert students and teachers any time, please consider making a gift to the Calvert Fund today.
