Latin Students Face Off Against High Schoolers in Duke University Certamen
Nine Calvert Middle Schoolers displayed their knowledge of Latin, classics, and mythology against high schoolers this month while competing in the virtual Fifth Annual Duke University Certamen on February 19.
Twenty-one teams from states including Virginia, Massachusetts, and New York participated in the national competition, with Calvert School being the only school to represent Maryland. Many of the teams consisted of high school students, and Magister Snow and his Calvert team were one of the few groups to come from a middle school; however, despite this significant age difference, Calvert’s Seventh and Eighth Grade teams continued to excel.
The Seventh Grade team of Johanna P. ’23, Claire S. ’23, and Liam D. ’23 claimed second placed in all three of their matches, finishing in 11th overall, while Eighth Graders Jack M. ’22, Jay S. ’22, and Sammy L. ’22 tied for first in their second-round match and claimed 14th place overall. Seventh Graders Esme I. ’23, Chiara B. ’23, and Vivien W. ’23 performed similarly to their classmates, claiming two second-place finishes before completing the competition in 15th place.
Next, members of the Certamen Team will start preparing for the Princeton University Certamen on Saturday, March 19.
We hope you will join us in cheering for these studious Mighty Bees and wishing them luck in their next competition!
