The Institute for Leadership & Purpose Hosts Inaugural MGP Leadership Summit
On Saturday, November 17th, Calvert School hosted over one hundred and eighty students from across Baltimore for the first-ever Middle Grades Partnership (MGP) Leadership Summit. Facilitated by the Institute for Leadership & Purpose, a team of dedicated Calvert faculty members and Eighth Grade student leaders set a positive, collaborative tone for this event that welcomed seventeen public, charter, and independent schools.
Throughout the event, students worked alongside each other in team-building initiatives, design challenges, and trust-building games. Students also heard from a variety of Baltimore civic leaders including Mr. Fagan Harris (CEO, Baltimore Corps), Ms. Rachel Brooks (Community Organizer, BUILD), and Calvert parent Leon Pinkett III (Baltimore City Councilman, District Seven). These speakers inspired students to believe in themselves by seeing the “possibilities, not probabilities”, “becoming agents of change”, and evolving into “MARVELous Leaders”.

Eighth Grader Benham C. shared in his opening speech, “The more you step outside of your comfort zone, the more confident you will be in new situations. That is one thing that MGP has taught me; realizing I can be nervous, but I should never be overwhelmed.”
Students from across the MGP program will be engaged in leadership projects throughout the school year ranging from environmental awareness to homelessness to gun violence advocacy. The Closing MGP Leadership Summit will be hosted at Calvert on Saturday, April 27, 2019.
An Overview of the MGP Leadership Program
This fall, The Institute for Leadership & Purpose at Calvert School is joining forces with the Middle Grades Partnership (MGP) to create an interactive School Year Student Leadership Program for over one hundred and eighty students at area public, charter, and independent middle schools. Since 2006, the Middle Grades Partnership has been changing the trajectory of the lives of Baltimore middle school students. The nine public and private school partnerships provide “exceptional summer programming that halts summer learning loss, balances enrichment with skill development and brings communities together to address silos of race, class, and opportunity.”

Our newly-launched School Year Program will bring together like-minded stakeholders from across the city to inspire student from a diverse population to discover their own strengths, and design initiatives to improve their schools and community.
