Calvert Squashers Shine at Nationals, Boys’ Team Claims Fourth Place
Way to go, Mighty Bees! This past weekend, January 31 to February 2, our boys’ and girls’ squash teams traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the 2025 U.S. Middle School Championships, where both teams excelled in tough matches against nationally ranked competitors.
The boys’ team of Daniel S. ’25, Grayson B. ’25, Zion C. ’25, Davis D. ’26, Sebastian C. ’26, and Ethan K. ’27 competed in the first division, defeating Episcopal Academy on Friday and Rye Country Day on Saturday to earn a spot in the semifinals.
After falling to the first-ranked team, Brunswick School out of Greenwich, Connecticut, in the semifinals, the team rallied to put up a good fight against Greens Farms Academy, winning two of the five matches. The boys’ performance earned them fourth place in Division I, Calvert’s best overall national finish since 2015.
Meanwhile, our No. 11 girls’ team of Virginia B. ’25, Sally T. ’25, Jalen M. ’25, Riley S. ’25, Elizabeth M. ’26, and Izora T. ’27 had a strong start in Division II, claiming a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Shipley School on Friday evening.
On Saturday, the girls faltered against No. 3 Greenwich Country Day but dominated their consolation bracket with victories over Louisville Collegiate and TEVF (Tredyffrin/Easttown and Valley Forge) to claim the second consolation title.
This trip to the U.S. Middle School Championships is quickly becoming a modern tradition for our Calvert players, who often represent our state as the sole Maryland competitors. Previously hosted at Yale University, the championships now take place at the Arlen Specter Squash Center at the home of U.S. Squash in Philadelphia.
Next, our squashers will compete in the 2025 Maryland Middle School Championship (February 3-4) on Calvert’s campus in the spacious Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.
We hope you will join us in congratulating the students – as well as coaches Silberstein, Betkowski, and Bedore – on another remarkable season! Good luck to all as competition continues!
