In early November, Calvert Eighth Graders began designing a giant gift box that would represent Baltimore and our friends at Paul's Place in a community art installation and competition at the Village of Cross Keys. Days later, they began executing their vision — and today, their creation is on display for all to see.
The giant gift box, now installed near Easy Like Sunday, is Calvert's submission to Gifting Back to Baltimore, a community art contest sponsored by Cross Keys. From November 21 to December 31, Cross Keys shoppers, vendors, and other visitors will vote for their favorite of eight boxes, each designed by students from local schools.
The box with the highest rating on December 31 will earn a $5,000 donation to an organization chosen by the winning school. In Calvert's case, that organization is Paul's Place, a local nonprofit that helps individuals in Southwest Baltimore navigate barriers to food, shelter, clothing, and more.
This year alone, Calvert Eighth Graders have also volunteered on-site and led a successful Thanksgiving Meal Drive in support of Paul's Place — and this partnership is represented on the students' gift box. In addition to the Baltimore skyline, the Maryland flag, and other local icons, one side of the box shows the red brick entrance to Paul's Place, complete with its iconic green awning.
Voting continues through December 31, and students are eager to continue to support our friends at Paul's Place, so make sure you vote and give Calvert a 10! Voting is available online and in person, and all members of our community are invited to view the gift boxes at Cross Keys.
