Calvert Community Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Day of Service
On Monday, January 16th, we held our eighth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Over 280 community members joined together to participate in a variety of service activities in honor of Dr. King's vision and legacy.
The day began with an opening act which included teachers and students singing uplifting songs, our middle school acapella group, and middle school students as storytellers. The performance included interactive songs and stories that tied in to King’s message of giving and equality.
The entire Calvert community, which included parents, alumni, friends, relatives, and children, came together in helping each other make a difference. Seventh and Eighth Grade Leaders helped set up, organize and run activities and assisted with clean up. In addition to student leaders, our faculty, staff, and parents collaborated as activity leaders, organizing and running various projects that served our community. Our extended community included six students from Johns Hopkins University’s baseball team. This is the third year that they have joined us.
A special thank you to all the people who made this day possible:
- Seventh and Eighth Grade students from Leadership Class and Diversity Club who helped set up on Saturday, and on Monday took pictures, registered participants, and assisted leaders and participants throughout the day.

- Keswick Adult Center - making scarves for senior citizens (Louise Catlin)
- Baltimore Hunger Project – packing backpacks with food (Angel Menefee & Taylor Passalacqua)
- Sarah’s Hope - making arts & crafts kits (Laura Spadone)
- The Samaritan Community - making scarfs & decorating winter hats(Terri Merwin)
- Paul’s Place-off-site (Jay Parker)
- Sister Africa School – Making sock puppets - (Kim Miles & Napoleon Thompson)
- Daily Bread - making sunbutter sandwiches (Kait Gentry & Mary Katherine Green)
- Village Learning Center - making study aids for inner city schools (Alexis Tantau & Katie Leonard)
- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital - making braid cloth bracelets (Helen Anderson)
- All participants, parents, children, family friends, former Calvert employees and students, JHU students
