Eighth Graders Race to the Chesapeake for the Cool Schools Plunge, Raise $11,000 for Special Olympics Maryland

Calvert Eighth Graders returned to Sandy Point State Park and the shores of the Chesapeake Bay this week as part of the School's sixth year participating in the Cool Schools Plunge, a fundraiser in support of Special Olympics Maryland. As part of the challenge, students were tasked with raising at least $50 each to benefit the non-profit organization, and our Mighty Bees went above and beyond, raising more than $11,000 total.
On Wednesday, March 24, the students “took the plunge” by running into the frigid Chesapeake Bay, getting soaked before drying off and warming up back onshore. This year marked the return of an in-person, off-campus plunge after last year’s event was hosted on Calvert’s Krongard Field. In a COVID-conscious adaptation, Eighth Grade Dean Neal McMahon dumped a bucket of ice-cold water over each student’s head to simulate the “real” experience.

This year – Calvert’s sixth – the students once again experienced the icy bay firsthand, continuing a tradition inspired by Oliver Clark ’20, his family, and their support of Special Olympics Maryland.

Special Olympics Maryland provides sports training and competition for Marylanders with physical and cognitive disabilities. This year, the Cool Schools Plunge surpassed its $400,000 goal in support of the organization.
