Cool Schools Plunge 2017: A Splashing Success
Calvert’s inaugural participation in the Cool Schools Plunge was unquestionably a splashing success! On January 26, after weeks of preparation, education, and fundraising for the Special Olympics, the Class of 2017 enthusiastically arrived at Sandy Point State Park for the event. Over 50 students and teachers took the plunge, some multiple times!
The Cool Schools Plunge supports the Special Olympics Maryland, and Team Calvert showed its strength by raising $7,871. Surpassing their goal by almost three times made them the top independent school in the state. Eighth Grader Jake T. expressed, “It was so great laughing with friends, freezing in the water, and seeing how many of us were out there enjoying ourselves as we supported the Special Olympics.”
Earlier in the week, the Middle School welcomed guest speaker Adam Hays, an accomplished Special Olympics athlete and the Athlete Leadership Coordinator for Special Olympics Maryland. He spoke of how much the Special Olympics means to him and his experience as a Super Plunger, taking the plunge 24 times in 24 hours.
Eighth Graders Helen B., Jake T., Charlie N., and Gib S. along with Fifth Graders Oliver C. and Gray D. spearheaded this initiative as part of the Calvert Student Leadership Program. “I loved seeing all my classmates out there to help the Special Olympics, as well as my cousins Oliver and Sutton,” noted Helen B. “It’s so cool that we came together as a grade and as a school!”
The inspiration throughout this initiative was Team Sutton and the Clark Family. Oliver and his sister Sutton proved to be one of the top teams in the Polar Bear Plunge. Team Sutton raised an incredible $27,627 and Oliver himself raised an impressive $19,222. “I want to thank everyone who donated, and of course the Eighth Grade for taking the plunge with us!” Oliver stated.
Keep up the great work Oliver, Sutton, and the Eighth Grade! You are great examples of student leadership!
