Larry Stifler '53 Brings Outer Space to Tuscany Road!

Seventh Age, Eighth Age, and Sixth Grade science students enjoyed an out of this world visit from alumnus Larry Stifler ’53! Dr. Stifler and his wife Mary McFadden founded the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum which is home to the largest collection of meteorites and moon rocks.

Citing a love of math and science that began at Calvert, Dr. Stifler spoke about his journey to open the museum and the important discoveries they’ve made while examining the rocks and meteorites in their collection.
Students held moon rocks, a fragment from Mars, and a pallasite meteorite. The highlight was when students got to touch a fragment of a star that went supernova seven billion years ago. This star eventually collided with another supernova and formed the Earth’s sun. According to Dr. Stifler, the fragment contains all the chemicals necessary for carbon-based life. “That little piece is almost like a picture of the history of our universe,” Dr. Stifler told students.

During the visit, Dr. Stifler met Middle School science teacher and fellow Calvert alumnus Matthew Gallo '15. Matthew's Sixth Grade students learn about astronomy in science class - and even visit Calvert's Luetkemeyer Planetarium on occasion!

Thank you, Dr. Stifler, and Ms McFadden!
