Calvert is a private school in Baltimore, Maryland offering coed elementary and middle school education that focuses on meeting each child at every stage of their development. Way to go, Mighty Bees! This past weekend, January 31 to February 2, our boys’ and girls’ squash teams traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the 2025 U.S. Middle School Championships, where both teams excelled in tough matches against nationally ranked competitors.
On Saturday, February 1, Calvert Latin students tested their classical knowledge and linguistic mettle at the Gilman Certamen, where they came out on top with two phenomenal first-place trophies.
Eighth Graders Quinn D. ’25, Andrew D. ’25, Alexander B. ’25, and Alex M. ’25 claimed the top spot at the Intermediate level, which covers material through Latin II. Meanwhile, fellow Eighth Graders Lily M. ’25, Katherine Y. ’25, Ben F. ’25, and Alyssa W. ’25 rose above their fellow competitors to earn first place at the Novice level.
The group was supported by fellow Calvert entrants and scholars Hadley B. ’26, Maggie G. ’26, Brynn Caffrey ’26, and Jackson B. ’25, who also competed at the Novice level. Together with Arabella W. ’26, Maggie and Brynn previously earned second place in the Novice division at the Saturnalia Certamen in December.
In recognition of their prowess, our two winning teams each received a trophy to commemorate their win. Great job to our student scholars!
For the first time more than a decade, Calvert School has a competitive wrestling team!
Director of Athletics Phil D'Adamo, coaches Bill Hardy and Matthew Gallo '15, and a handful of proactive students recently revived the program to join basketball and squash as one of this year's winter offerings.
The newly created team is made up of Middle Schoolers Patrick T. '25, Zina N. '27, Lucas B. '27, and Owen A. '28, and the program is enhanced by a partnership with Friends School, which provides practice opportunities and more.
On Friday, January 17, the entire on-campus community gathered to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and reflect upon his legacy of compassion and community engagement. The all-school assembly featured powerful remarks from John N. '25 and Mia M. '25, a recitation of Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" by Alexander B. '25, and performances from the Middle School Glee Club and Lower School Choir.
Calvert teams claimed first and second place in their division of the Saturnalia Certamen earlier this month, showcasing the students' understanding of Latin, mythology, and more.
At the December 7 competition, hosted by the Key School in Annapolis, Calvert's teams competed in the Novice division, where Quinn D. '25 and Alexander B. '25 clinched first place with an outstanding score of 505.
Right behind them were Seventh Graders Maggie G. '26, Arabella W. '26, and Brynn C. '26, who claimed second place and suffered only one loss — to their first-place schoolmates.
This month, Calvert Eighth Graders led a Thanksgiving Meal Drive in partnership with Paul's Place and the Baltimore Hunger Project — and thanks to the support of our community, they were able to assemble more than 60 meal baskets for local families.
In early November, Calvert Eighth Graders began designing a giant gift box that would represent Baltimore and our friends at Paul's Place in a community art installation and competition at the Village of Cross Keys. Days later, they began executing their vision — and today, their creation is on display for all to see.
The giant gift box, now installed near Easy Like Sunday, is Calvert's submission to Gifting Back to Baltimore, a community art contest sponsored by Cross Keys. From November 21 to December 31, Cross Keys shoppers, vendors, and other visitors will vote for their favorite of eight boxes, each designed by students from local schools.
Calvert Director of Squash Patrick Bedore and his father, Thomas Bedore, made history this month at the U.S. Masters Squash Championships by becoming the first father and son to claim titles together.
On Sunday, April 7, Calvert's very own Coach Bedore earned his first national title as champion in the 35+ age group. He also helped coach his father, who claimed the champion spot in the 70+ division.
Twelve Middle School students traveled to the University of Pennsylvania on April 6 to represent Calvert School at the second Penn Certamen, a quiz-bowl competition that tests students’ knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology, ancient history, Latin, and more.
In the Lower School, students far exceeded their March Reading Madness goal of 3,000 hours! Calvert challenged students to read a total of 3,000 in one month, but students readily surpassed that goal, reading approximately 4,500 total hours.
